Support a full Parliamentary enquiry into the NSW pet industry
With no regulation and little rules, the Pet Industry is costing the NSW public an estimated $60m annually and a staggering number of animals (60,000+) are killed in order for the industry to profit. The NSW government has not brought about effective policy to greater manage this industry. Legislation is based primarily on the best commercial outcome and not ideal community and social policy. As a result, the NSW Public suffers, council workers suffer and the animals suffer. In any other industry where so much is made by so few . . and such a cost is incurred by the public, there would be far greater focus on appropriate regulation and policy. This is why NSW Animal Policy is flawed. To find out more and what action you can take visit the Fix NSW Animal Policy website.

If you see a Pet Store selling puppies and kittens who look sick or distressed, or too young to be away from their mothers, or an animal without access to food and water, then you are witnessing cruelty. You need to tell someone. Tell us, the RSPCA or contact your local MP ot the Police.
Other important things for pet owners or potential pet owners to do
-
Never buy a cat or dog from a pet shop, newspaper advertisement, market place or via the Internet. Never. Unless they are finding good homes for de-sexed animals from a registered rescue agency and even then, check them out carefully
-
Never fall for the “look after the kitten or puppy for us for the weekend” pet shop marketing trick. Don't allow your emotions to get the better of you!
- Never buy a puppy or kitten as a present for someone else. Being a pet owner means taking on a huge responsibility - both in the time and resources needed to care for a pet for its lifetime. You cannot make that decision for someone else
-
Adopt from Shelters and Rescue adoption agencies – there are NO SHORTAGE of beautiful animals to choose from (until we reduce the over-supply) Click here for where to go - and please make sure your new pet is de-sexed
-
Don’t forget adult animals – they are often over-looked, but they often make a better pet (what you see is what you get, unlike a puppy or kitten who has yet to develop their adult behaviours - good and bad, and yes, we know that kittens and puppies can be really hard work!)
- Always make sure your pet has been de-sexed. Never, ever let your pet have even just the one litter. Never keep an animal that is not de-sexed. (Most Shelters and agencies won’t sell you one that is fertile in any case). Visit the National De-sexing Network for more information
-
Never support or buy any product from a pet shop that sells cats and dogs (unless they are ONLY selling de-sexed rescued animals from a genuine Shelter or Rescue Centre)
- Check with shelters and breed-specific rescue clubs if you really want a particular breed. Our own beautiful Boxer Tia was rescued by Boxer Rescue from imminent death, and she is a wonderful companion to her mixed-breed 'brother' Ian and 'sister' Muffin, both from DoggieRescue.com
- Always ensure that your own pet is micro-chipped (compulsory in NSW and VIC) and has a legible tag or label on a sturdy collar. Check regularly that this is information is current
- Make sure you are part of the solution and not the problem...
